Wayne Shorter had already set a high bar over the course of his first several Blue Note albums, which included all-time jazz classics including Night Dreamer, JuJu, and Speak No Evil, but 1966’s Adam’s Apple featuring Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums immediately joined the ranks of the saxophonist’s greatest recordings and remains a pinnacle artistic statement of Blue Note’s fertile post-bop era
Pure Devotion is Overmono’s most ambitious project to date. Across the 11 tracks, Overmono have pushed their recording process into bold new territories, adopting experimental production techniques that involve synthesisers from the 70s and 80s, an antiquated train announcement speaker, and literally baking a crash cymbal in the oven. There’s a powerful sense of intention and physicality embedded in every choice, which extends to the emotive vocal features from revered British poet John Joseph Holt, close collaborator Kindora, and Paul Institute’s Ruthven.
This is not an LP that explores a neat and tidy love story. It isn't interested in the happy ending. It's interested in everything that comes before it, after it, and in spite of it, pulling inspiration from wherever it presented itself, even the most unlikely of places: "It didn't feel like we were making soul music at any point," he says. "It felt like we were making our music."
Mr Bongo reissue Bobby Williams' coveted deep funk rarity Funky Super Fly from 1974. Rich in raw, gritty, from-the-heart grooves, the influence of James Brown is strong, yet the tracks are distinctly Bobby. Oozing style and substance, the album is full of fiery horn sections, strutting guitars and infectious basslines tracked by plenty of prime breakbeats.
Featuring collaborators as diverse as former Portico Quartet bandmates drummer Duncan Bellamy and bassist Milo Fitzpatrick, iconoclastic Polish artist Hania Rani, cellist Dobrawa Czocher, and Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, Eternal Spring draws inspiration both from Wyllie’s love of verdant nature and from the idea of a constant, flickering sense of hope.
