Over a 100 years after his birth year, we still celebrate his genius. In conjunction with the Charles Mingus Estate, Candid Records is proud to present MINGUS AT MONTEREY for official reissue. This tour de force live performance from the 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival captures Mingus at the top of his form and the height of his powers. Out of print for more than 40 years, this landmark recording was originally released on Mingus’ own short-lived mail-order label. It has consistently been the most requested reissue by Mingus fans. This 2 LP disc set has been remastered by five-time Grammy Award Winning Engineer Michael Graves, with lacquers cut by Jeff Powell, and pressed on 180 Gram vinyl. Original gatefold jacket artwork has meticulously restored and reproduced.

None of Miles Davis' recordings has been more shrouded in mystery than Jack Johnson, yet none has better fulfilled Davis' promise that he could form the "greatest rock band you ever heard." Containing only two tracks, the album was assembled out of no less than four recording sessions between February 18, 1970 and June 4, 1970, and was patched together by producer Teo Macero.

Granz and Holiday chose familiar items from the Great American Songbook of classic pop for the album, Holiday singing in the context comfortable for her, that of a small jazz band. The original album consisted of six standards, five of which by songwriters who would be categorically tackled by Ella Fitzgerald on her Songbooks series. The sessions reunited Holiday with trumpeter Harry Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, both of whom the singer had worked with during the 1930s and 1940s, Edison as a member of the Count Basie Orchestra during her brief stay as the band's girl singer, and Webster from the recordings under her own name for Vocalion Records and Okeh Records.

This album was inspired by the music coming out of Jamaica in the mid 1970s, in particular the use of drum machines by Lee Perry and Aston Family Man Barrett (and Sly Stone in the USA) but also the instrumentals and dubs by Keith Hudson and Im & Count Ossie etc. Searching out, buying and listening to those records had a deep and profound effect on me and became a big influence on me as a musician, which continues to this day.

The 1953 Bud Shank/Laurindo Almeida recordings are recognized as being the precursors of bossa nova-jazz fusion. However, two 1962 Stan Getz LPs, Jazz Samba and Big Band Bossa Nova (presented here), and the albums that followed them in 1963, Jazz Samba Encore and Getz-Gilberto, would start the bossa nova craze.

Peter Somuah spins tales that come from his instrument: as a young trumpet player, he embarked on a fascinating search for his identity between the Highlife music of his native country, Miles Davis - his idol - and the cosmopolitan musical language of Holland, the country which is now his home. He tells that story in Letter to the Universe.
