The West Side Story (1961) soundtrack features music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, released by Columbia Masterworks Records. It spent 54 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s stereo albums chart — the longest run at No. 1 for any album at the time — and also topped the mono chart for 6 weeks. The album won a Grammy for Best Sound Track Album – Original Cast in 1962 and is certified three times platinum in the U.S.
Notably, most of the singing in the film was dubbed by professional vocalists, including Marni Nixon, who sang for Natalie Wood as Maria, and Jim Bryant, who voiced Richard Beymer as Tony. Rita Moreno’s Anita was partly dubbed by Betty Wand, and Russ Tamblyn’s Riff was dubbed by Tucker Smith for some songs
The soundtrack includes iconic tracks like “Maria,” “America,” “Tonight,” and “Somewhere,” and remains a landmark in musical film history for its orchestration and emotional depth

Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian — widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile musicians of the 20th century Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Jewish parents of Russian/Ukrainian heritage, he was initially named Louis but legally changed it to Leonard at age 16. He studied at Harvard University and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he honed his skills in conducting, piano, and composition His career took off in 1943 when, at age 25, he stepped in at the last minute to conduct the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall — a performance broadcast nationwide that made him an overnight sensation
