Sam Shepherd (aka Floating Points) has traded nightclubs for the ballet stage with Mere Mortals, a retelling of the Greek myth of Pandora. Premiering with the San Francisco Ballet in 2024, and returning in 2026, the work recasts Pandora as a symbol of curiosity and change.

Mere Mortals, the artist’s debut ballet score, reimagines the story of Pandora’s Box through the lens of our tech-driven age. Exploring eternal philosophical questions through the timely subject of artificial intelligence, this ballet examines the promises and perils of humankind forging new paths in unknown territory.
Floating Points is currently appearing live in a new run of Mere Mortals in San Francisco, and will also take part in the work’s European premiere at the Edinburgh Festival with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra alongside shows at Sadler’s Wells in London with the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

Sam Shepherd, known professionally as Floating Points, is a British electronic music producer, DJ, and musician. He is the founder of Pluto Records, co-founder of Eglo Records and leader of a 16-piece group called Floating Points Ensemble.
