Recorded at Woolwich Green Farm in Berkshire and produced by Chris Blackwell, the album employed highly unusual recording techniques, including the placement of speakers and microphones around a lake to capture natural ambience and environmental sounds.
The album blends folk, jazz, rock, dub and ambient influences into a distinctive and atmospheric soundscape. Its eight tracks range from the reggae-inflected "Big Muff" and the hypnotic "Smiling Stranger" to the tender ballad "Couldn't Love You More" and the expansive closing piece "Small Hours", a haunting composition that showcases Martyn's pioneering use of Echoplex guitar effects. Contributions from musicians including Steve Winwood, Danny Thompson and Rico Rodriguez enrich the album's textured arrangements.
