He was profoundly influential, having inspired generations of musicians in Brazil and beyond; guitarist Joao Gilberto, for instance, confessed to having taken the new rhythm pattern from Donato's piano playing. Presented here in its entirety is Donato's album Muito a Vontade, recorded in a quartet format in 1962 and featuring the great Milton Banana on drums, best known for his playing with Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz.
About the artist
João Donato de Oliveira Neto was a Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist as well as a trombonist from Rio Branco. He first worked with Altamiro Carrilho and went on to perform with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto. Because of the area he grew up in Brasil he was able to hear Cuban music on the radio.
