World Psychedelic Classic 5 - Who is William Onyeabor?

The early 21st Century, a shadowy figure rose from the dust that settled atop forgotten record collections throughout Africa, leaving behind trails of clues, but Luaka Bop unmask a phantom: the great William Onyeabor.

Artist: William Onyeabor

Genre: African Jazz/Funk/Psych

Label: Luaka Bop

Release date:

He studied cinematography in Russia for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-70s to start his own Wilfilms label and set up a music and film studio. He recorded a number of hit songs in Nigeria during the 70s, the biggest was "Atomic Bomb". "Better Change Your Mind" is taken from the same album, and, as well as slating the power-crazed nations of the world, the second half settles into a unique slice of stripped down spacey, lo-fi funk which is unlike any other Nigerian music being made at the time.

About the artist

William Ezechukwu Onyeabor was a Nigerian funk musician and businessman. His music was widely heard in Nigeria in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite his success, he remained an enigmatic, private, and reclusive figure.
