The Listening Room Event #4 - Every Day

The Listening Room Event #4 - Every Day

The LP:

Back in 1999, The Cinematic Orchestra's debut record "Motion"set critical tongues wagging with its unique take on modern dance music production techniques and the sheer visual energy of its sound.  The group returned in 2002  with a follow-up which is deeper than the ocean, packing a tremendous emotional punch, by turns mournful and celebratory and with a rigour that is so often lacking in contemporary cut and paste.

Across seven sweeping, dramatic tracks, the group take you on a journey through classic soul, jazz, choral pieces, sinking horn riffs, throbbing harp b-lines, minimalism and more. All imbued with a contemporary edge and an intellect that keeps things as far as is possible from lazy wallpaper wank.

J Swinscoe is more the arranger/conductor here than the producer, but of course, there's little need for samples or effects with such an accomplished band sharing the burden.

For the opener "All That You Give," Swinscoe and Co., plus harp player Rhodri Davies, spend a few minutes delicately paving the way for a deeply felt vocal by soul hero Fontella Bass ((the writer and performer of '60s soul masterpiece "Rescue Me" and member of free jazz renegades the Art Ensemble of Chicago). "Burn Out" is a lush, meditative track with a pleasantly ambling solo from Phil France on electric piano, a few appropriately cinematic-sounding horns, an age-old vocal sample, and occasional creaking static phasing through. Bass returns for another splendid track ("Evolution"), and the mighty Roots Manuva appears on a magisterial, spoken-word quasi-autobiography, "All Things to All Men."

Every Day is a textured, acoustic work; Cinematic Orchestra take their time setting up these songs -- of the seven tracks, four last over nine minutes.

So sit back, close your eyes and be prepared to enjoy the latest home movie from J. Swinscoe and his associates. It's anything but everyday…

The Event:

We would like to host 16 of you on Wednesday March 25 at 6.30pm when we will dim the lights, even offer you a blackout eye mask and then drop the needle for an incredibly deep listening experience.

For this one, we'll be accompanied by Capsule’s own Simon Skevington who enjoyed an illustrious 25-year career at Ninja Tune, where he played a pivotal role in nearly every facet of running a busy, internationally respected independent record label. His experience spanned A&R, marketing, product management, logistics, and beyond.

In 2001–02, he worked directly on The Cinematic Orchestra’s Every Day campaign—an album that went on to become a defining release of the early-2000s jazz-influenced downtempo movement.

Ticket prices are 50% off when bought with the LP.

What To Expect On The Night?

Expect an evening of familiar faces gathering together to share in the joy of quality music discovery! Specifically, we will (re)open the shop doors at 6.30pm to welcome you in and give you all the chance to grab a drink and settle.

At 6.45pm we will introduce the album, then turn the lights down, offer you an eye mask and invite complete silence in advance of dropping the needle to give you the opportunity to disappear into the music. The evening will then last for as long as the album!

What Others Say About These Nights...

"Capsule Records continue to bring great music both familiar and not so familiar to the good people of Brighton & Hove (and beyond) via their listening experience evenings with the finest sound system it has been my pleasure to enjoy. Each selection is carefully thought about and listened to in advance to ensure those attending will have the optimal enjoyment on the night It has led to me viewing my own music collection in a fresh light with renewed enthusiasm and an appreciation for the input of those involved in the whole process'. Keith

"Thanks all for a wonderful evening. A profoundly moving and uplifting experience. To be transported into the studio, through such incredible audio and immersed in the sound from such great musicians. What a joy! Will be back for more". Nick

"In the dark, with a full house, we listened to each track in remarkable clarity. The double bass was wonderfully prominent, the drums had incredible precision, and the vocals of Fontella Bass and Roots Manuva (in particular) soared above the instrumentation, creating an unforgettable experience". Simon
