Listening Room SPECIAL - Wonky Logic - Mek Do & Mend

The Event:

This November, Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings will release Mek Do & Mend, the debut album from self-taught producer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and artist Wonky Logic. Although his name may not yet be familiar to everyone, Wonky Logic (AKA Dwayne Kilvington) has spent the past two decades moving comfortably between London's jazz, electronic and contemporary music scenes, performing and recording with artists including Nala Sinephro, Yussef Dayes, Nightmares On Wax, Shabaka Hutchings and Emma-Jean Thackray.

We're incredibly excited to announce that Dwayne will be joining us for a very special Listening Event to launch the LP.

We invite 18 of you to join us at 6.30pm on Friday 13th November, the LP's release date, as we chat to Dwayne about the making of the LP before we dim the lights and then drop the needle for an incredibly deep listening experience. Dwayne is also going to bring his sampler with him to capture some beats and show us the creative process in action.....

The LP:

Far more than a collection of compositions, Mek Do & Mend is a deeply personal reflection on the people, places and experiences that have shaped Dwayne throughout his life.

Across its fourteen tracks, Mek Do & Mend moves effortlessly between dynamic jazz arrangements, pulsating broken rhythms, delicate, twinkling piano passages, interstellar synth textures and elegant brass lines.

Album opener and first single 'Strange Attractor' begins with a shimmering introduction before unfolding into an exhilarating surge of rhythm and momentum. Named after the mathematical concept of the same name, it serves as the conceptual point of origin for the album. Written when Kilvington was just seventeen, the composition reflects the idea that even the most unpredictable lives are guided by hidden patterns that often only become visible with time.

Second single 'A Thousand Hands' features the unmistakable vocal tones of Brother Portrait, whose cerebral lyricism drifts over a low-slung, constantly shifting groove as woozy synth lines ebb and flow overhead. At its heart, the track celebrates the family, friends, mentors and collaborators whose often unseen influence shapes who we become, echoing the album's belief that every achievement is, in some way, a collective one.

LP focus track 'BAME (Beyond All Marginalised Expectations)' is a lush, spiralling composition, brimming with both emotion and resolve. Reclaiming an acronym long imposed on racialised communities in the UK, the piece transforms it into a statement of possibility rather than limitation: a defiant rejection of stereotypes and a refusal to let identity be defined by other people's expectations.

As Dwayne puts it: "I don't want this body of work to be reduced to a jazz record. It's more like a novel about life told through music."

Tickets:

For this 'in-person' special event more of the tickets are part of a vinyl bundle to encourage a vinyl sale and recognise Dwayne's efforts in coming to see us, and to ensure his debut LP sales get a boost!

Ticket prices are 50% off when bought with a record.

What To Expect On The Night?

Expect an evening of familiar faces gathering together to share in the joy of quality music discovery! Specifically, we will (re)open the shop doors at 6.30pm to welcome you in and give you all the chance to grab a drink and settle.

At 6.45pm we will introduce the album, then turn the lights down, offer you an eye mask and invite complete silence in advance of dropping the needle to give you the opportunity to disappear into the music. The evening will then last for as long as the album!

What Others Say About These Nights...

"Capsule Records continue to bring great music both familiar and not so familiar to the good people of Brighton & Hove (and beyond) via their listening experience evenings with the finest sound system it has been my pleasure to enjoy. Each selection is carefully thought about and listened to in advance to ensure those attending will have the optimal enjoyment on the night It has led to me viewing my own music collection in a fresh light with renewed enthusiasm and an appreciation for the input of those involved in the whole process'. Keith

"Thanks all for a wonderful evening. A profoundly moving and uplifting experience. To be transported into the studio, through such incredible audio and immersed in the sound from such great musicians. What a joy! Will be back for more". Nick

"In the dark, with a full house, we listened to each track in remarkable clarity. The double bass was wonderfully prominent, the drums had incredible precision, and the vocals of Fontella Bass and Roots Manuva (in particular) soared above the instrumentation, creating an unforgettable experience". Simon
