Welcome to Capsule Records

At Capsule Records, we strongly believe in the power of music and community. As an independent record shop, we started with the local area in mind. Since then, we have been on a mission to foster a musical community and make the joy of music accessible to all.

Our stock is a carefully curated selection of LPs that we love. From soul, jazz, disco, electronica, and hip-hop to some bits in between, there’s something for everyone. For those who like to dig deeper, we also have crates like African Funk, Japanese Jazz and Modern Classical.

To help you discover something new or find an old favourite, we’ve stuck QR codes on the front of all our LPs that direct you to a listening link with information about the artist and label. If you’re without a phone, just ask, and we can play it for you on our tailor-made PMC sound system. So, take a seat in our beautifully designed coffee area, enjoy a drink of your choice (we also stock alcohol!) and relax.

Our atmosphere in store is also aided by our weekly DJ sets, as part of our Capsule Connect initiative designed to support the local DJ community. We hope that by using our platform to promote local DJs and the venues that host them, we can bring the best of what Brighton has to offer to you.

Gaining traction in the UK clubs, that single, plus its follow-up, ‘Feel Free’, found Soul II Soul soundtracking the “Second Summer of Love”, and their third single, ‘Keep on Movin’’, finally got people dancing up and down the country as the band’s burgeoning fanbase went overground. Taking the group into the Top 5, ‘Keep on Movin’’ was followed by ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’, whose infectious groove reached the UK No.1 spot and went Top 5 across the Atlantic. As these singles’ parent album, Club Classics Vol. One, became a UK chart-topper and a US Top 20 (under the name Keep on Movin’), Soul II Soul set the pace for British soul music, inspiring countless homegrown acts that have followed. Marking its 35th anniversary, the album now returns to vinyl in a picture-disc edition featuring the group’s signature Funki Dredd logo.

Club Classics Vol. 1 (National Album Day 2024)

Reaching No.9 in the UK, it introduced “big beat” music – as the club-filling mix of hip-hop and acid house had been christened – to a mainstream audience, helping to fuel its dominance on the British dance scene as the 20th century came to a close. Opening with ‘Leave Home’, the Chems’ debut single and a swift UK Top 20 hit, the album also features collaborations with folktronica icon Beth Orton, on closing cut ‘Alive Alone’, and Charlatans’ frontman, Tim Burgess, on the album’s second single, ‘Life is Sweet’, which took The Chemical Brothers back into the UK charts, hitting No.25 following its September 1995 release. Amid these standouts is a track that had already become a signature tune for the duo of Ed Simons and Tim Rowlands: ‘Chemical Beats’. Originally issued on the highly collectable Fourteenth Century Sky 12” EP – issued in 1994 under the Chems’ earlier name, The Dust Brothers – it had already become a club classic by the time of Exit Planet Dust’s release, and, 30 years on, it still sounds huge on this 140g red- and gold-coloured double-vinyl reissue
