Album of the week

Disco Jazz

Barely disco and hardly jazz, Rupa Biswas’ 1982 LP is the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic.

RADIO SHOW

Capsule Records x The Numero Group

On this week’s show, we'll be sharing the conversation we had last week with Rob Sevier of the iconic label, Numero Group.

Welcome to Capsule Records

At Capsule Records, we strongly believe in the power of music and community. As an independent record shop, we started with the local area in mind. Since then, we have been on a mission to foster a musical community and make the joy of music accessible to all.

Our stock is a carefully curated selection of LPs that we love. From soul, jazz, disco, electronica, and hip-hop to some bits in between, there’s something for everyone. For those who like to dig deeper, we also have crates like African Funk, Japanese Jazz and Modern Classical.

To help you discover something new or find an old favourite, we’ve stuck QR codes on the front of all our LPs that direct you to a listening link with information about the artist and label. If you’re without a phone, just ask, and we can play it for you on our tailor-made PMC sound system. So, take a seat in our beautifully designed coffee area, enjoy a drink of your choice (we also stock alcohol!) and relax.

Our atmosphere in store is also aided by our weekly DJ sets, as part of our Capsule Connect initiative designed to support the local DJ community. We hope that by using our platform to promote local DJs and the venues that host them, we can bring the best of what Brighton has to offer to you.

“Capsule Records are a breath of fresh air. Hugely knowledgeable, with a terrific collection of proper music, they go to great length to curate just what is right. My go to place!” - Dunstan Rickard

Find a Way' is the new album from Manchester-based pianist, composer, and producer Matt Wilde, released via his own imprint Hello World Records. The album serves as a reminder that creativity should be accessible and the importance of opening yourself to the unexpected as you 'Find a Way' through all endeavours. Digging into improvisation and jazz harmony on the LP, he crafts a sound that bridges jazz, hip hop, and electronic music, adding: "The creative act is not a matter of waiting for the perfect conditions, but of moving gently, insistently, through the imperfect".

A record that finds Richard at the peak of his powers. It’s a set which spans the many facets of his sound, from his classic string-soaked acoustic balladry and anthemic indie-rock, through to flashes of Americana, soul and glitchy electro beats. Its themes are intimate and personal, dominated by love, romance and affecting messages of support for those struggling with life’s challenges

The acclaimed album from Svaneborg Kardyb is now repressed on bio vinyl. The Danish duo, Nikolaj Svaneborg (keys) and Jonas Kardyb (drums, percussion) craft intricate, cyclical compositions that balance introspective warmth with an underlying sense of movement. Jazz-tinged minimalism that drifts between contemplation and momentum, where soft Wurlitzer swells and crisp percussion ripple like echoes in still water.

By the end of the 1970s Linval Thompson had cut out a successful dual career for himself as both singer and producer. Naturally he moved in the dub field as well, getting further use out of rhythms he used in his other works. Dub had begun strictly as an album format with limited pressing runs for scene insiders, but it had swiftly gained the interest of the rank and file reggae buffs.
