To celebrate that spirit, this listening event focuses on two recordings that capture Miles at important moments in his career.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eA Miles double: Ascenseur pour l'échafaud \u0026amp; Kind of Blue\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe will host \u003cstrong\u003e16 of you on Thursday 2nd July at 6.30pm,  \u003c\/strong\u003eWe will play \u003cem\u003eAscenseur pour l'échafaud first (25 mins), \u003c\/em\u003efollowed by\u003cem\u003e Kind of Blue (45 mins). \u003c\/em\u003eWe will set the Listening Room up cafe style for this one so you can relax, have a drink and move around (if needed) whilst enjoying the music. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Music:\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe begin with \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAscenseur pour l'échafaud\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003e t\u003c\/em\u003ehe film score for '\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElevator to the Gallows'. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSeven decades on this record still remains one of the only jazz soundtracks which was entirely improvised. \u003c\/span\u003eOn the 4th of December, 1957, at 10pm, Davis and his new group of French musicians began recording. They drank for an hour, played for four and edited for two, leaving the studio at 5am the next day with a finished score for the entire film. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s a \u003cstrong\u003eremarkable session\u003c\/strong\u003e, and \u003cstrong\u003ea significant one\u003c\/strong\u003e. You can hear Miles moving toward what would become modal jazz, laying the groundwork for what, just a couple of years later, would become the best-selling jazz record of all time, \u003cem\u003eKind of Blue\u003c\/em\u003e. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAscenseur pour l'échafaud\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e is being reissued on 22nd May 2026 to mark the centenary (premium archival reissue with original artwork in a deluxe gatefold).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom there, the natural next step is \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKind of Blue\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. Recorded just under two years later, it finds Miles refining that same approach into something more open and spacious. \u003cstrong\u003eBuilt on simple scales\u003c\/strong\u003e rather than complex chord changes, the music allows for a remarkable level of interaction between players, with standout contributions from \u003cstrong\u003eJohn Coltrane \u003c\/strong\u003eand \u003cstrong\u003eBill Evans.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is a record that feels both \u003cstrong\u003eeffortless and deeply considered\u003c\/strong\u003e, and part of what has made it so enduring.
