In the mid-1960s, British groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones swept across the globe, while in the United States Bob Dylan famously swapped his folk guitar for an electric one, igniting the folk-rock movement. From the surge of new energy among young people in Britain and America — entwined with hippie culture, drugs, and the radical momentum of the anti-Vietnam War movement — an extraordinary body of rock music emerged, ushering in what would become the golden age of rock in the 1970s. In Japan, from around 1968, record companies began grouping these sounds under the label "New Rock," introducing domestic releases of Western rock to Japanese audiences.

At the time, Japan was in the midst of the peak GS (Group Sounds) boom – a sound that fused Japanese kayōkyoku music and Western rock music. But possessing a rare sense of foresight, singer and record producer Yuya Uchida encountered this revolutionary new wave of rock firsthand during his travels through Europe beginning in the spring of 1967. After returning to Japan, he formed Yuya Uchida & The Flowers. Their freaked-out sound — steel guitar driven through wah pedals and fuzz — marked them as something entirely different, standing apart from conventional GS acts. Other groups also added British and American rock numbers to their repertoires, but because their shows and releases were fundamentally bound to the structures of the Japanese entertainment industry, most had few options once the GS boom faded: they either shifted toward a strictly kayōkyoku-style path or disbanded altogether.

Even so, in 1970, The Flowers, now joined by Joe Yamanaka, formerly of 4.9.1, and Hideki Ishima, formerly of The Beavers, renamed themselves Flower Travellin' Band and went on to make their mark overseas. At the same time, other key musicians from the GS generation — including Shigeru Narumo of The Fingers and Hiro Yanagida of The Floral — fought to establish a distinctly Japanese form of rock music. Meanwhile, folk music driven by young anti-establishment artists began to rise out of the underground scene, gradually influencing the mainstream. As a result, record companies one after another launched dedicated rock and folk labels, signaling a major shift in the industry.

In 1972, Nippon Columbia launched its first dedicated rock and folk label, Propeller, releasing a steady stream of forward-looking titles by artists such as Hiroshi Segawa (formerly of The Dynamites) and Tetsu Yamauchi, who, up until then, was a prolific session musician in the scene. Influenced by late-'60s acts like Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago, Japanese jazz musicians also began boldly incorporating rock elements into their work. Recorded between 2023 and 2025 in his studio Endless Smile Records and mixed by his longtime collaborator Mr. Gib, the album opens with the trip-hop anthem “The Last Opening”. Far from being a simple introduction, it acts as a true gateway into Degiheugi’s new sonic journey. Keyboards set the tone, the horn section led by N’Zeng invites listeners into the groove, while guitars and organic keyboards immerse us fully into his musical world.

The scene is set: he’s back. Among the standout tracks, “Ain’t Goin Down” delivers a reggae-influenced groove driven by a message of hope, while “Vem O Mar” (feat. The album also reveals Degiheugi’s signature melancholic side.

An addictive loop settles deep into the listener’s mind as “Sympathique et sympa” balances nostalgia with urban groove. Axel Concato and Barth Corbelet each wrote five pieces independently, deliberately exploring as instinctively and introspectively as possible before reshaping their embryonic ideas together into bigger, brighter compositions, uncovering hidden humour along the way.

Cinema remains Bolbec’s primary language. "We always think in movie scenes”,, they explain. Barth points to Alberto Iglesias as a key influence, while Axel draws inspiration from the melodic logic of film scores from the 60s to the 80s, where characters carried themes and melody mattered as much as atmosphere. In contrast to contemporary soundtrack trends that prioritise texture over tune, Bolbec consciously foreground melody, harmony and rhythm in search of a personal musical signature.

That philosophy extends to the album’s French language titles, which act as scene headings rather than explanations. Often playful and sometimes absurd, names such as ‘Café Frappé’, ‘Foutu Félin’ and ‘Le Prof de Gong’ sound like fragments of half-remembered films, inviting listeners to project their own narratives.

The album opens with ‘Café Frappé’, written in a single night by Axel. A clear nod to Morricone’s The Sicilian Clan, it also hints at French classical minimalism and the restrained tension of Portishead. Minimal at first, it expands through shifting orchestration as the same theme repeats, following a scene as it subtly evolves. ‘En Voiture’ plays like the opening shot of a road movie. Inspired by Ravel’s Boléro, it cycles patiently through two long themes, stretching repetition until it almost disappears. Classical structure drifts into jazz phrasing, with drummer Tim Giles sustaining its slow-burn momentum before flautist Gareth Lockrane improvises freely as the melody gradually falls away.

The title track ‘Foutu Félin’ leans into humour. Built around a buoyant walking bass, it imagines a feline character strutting somewhere between slapstick animation and jazz club swagger. The track subtly recalls the walking bass motif from the title piece of Victime De L’aube, reinforcing the sense that both albums inhabit the same cinematic universe.

‘Le Prof de Gong’ unfolds like a classic European score cue. Beginning as a simple guitar sketch, it grows into a richly layered waltz featuring banjo, piano, and wordless but melodic scat singing recalling the ethereal vocals of classic Piero Umiliani scores. A single melodic idea is reinterpreted across shifting moods, nodding to Morricone, Legrand and John Barry, in the process. Elsewhere, recurring characters and locations appear. ‘Fanny’ began life as a vocal-led piece and survived Bolbec’s original plan to avoid vocals entirely thanks to its fragile, Robert Wyatt-like charm. A second version, ‘Fanny au Phare’, reimagines the same figure by the sea, windswept and romantic, with a faint Wuthering Heights atmosphere. Barth’s vocal is initially replaced by a drunken, sax-like Juno synth, before giving way to Vincent Défossé’s more sober trumpet. In the final chapter, Ross Stanley’s piano riffs drift close to Tyner/Coltrane’s ‘My Favourite Things’, before twisting back around into the opening motif.

Much of Foutu Félin was sketched at home before being taken to Fish Factory Studio in the UK, where musicians were encouraged to interpret and improvise freely. Performances were then carefully edited and reshaped, closer in spirit to cut-and-paste production than traditional jazz recording. Feel consistently took priority over technical perfection.

Returning players Tim Giles, Riaan Vosloo, Ross Stanley and Gareth Lockrane are joined by saxophonist James Allsop, whose contribution became a defining surprise, notably on ‘Ponto Final’. Additional recordings were completed in Rouen, with final mixes by Axel mastered by Sean Joseph in Bristol, whose sense of warmth and acoustic space helped shape the album’s sound.

Ultimately, Foutu Félin confirms Bolbec’s identity. As she explains: “It doesn’t happen often that I’m asked to work on a film by a director whose work I know so well and which resonates with me so naturally. What I understood while working with such an intriguing mind and intelligent artist as Joachim is that the role of a film composer is to wander along with the director, hand in hand, rather than follow one another. The collaboration should be a partnership - evenly balanced and able to invigorate people on both ends - otherwise it will always feel superficial, imposed, and timid”

Intriguingly Hania worked on the score for Sentimental Value without an edit in hand; instead, she was given a carefully written script and the freedom of her own substantial imagination. “This way of composing suits me perfectly, as I’m not the type of composer who works comfortably with particular scenes, slightly immune to functionality in music in general. I prefer to ponder sound in separation from the image. It enables me to fabricate more abstract sequences that are not yet expressed in the film and to bring a new context to the existing narrative. Music as an inherent counterpoint - this sounds more intriguing to me”.

For Hania the biggest challenge of the score was its gravity - or rather its visibly elusive nature. The story told in the film oscillates around three characters and the motionless presence of the house, yet the relationships between all these personalities are not fixed, but in progress. Those subtle qualities were at the center of her attention and became the core topic of numerous discussions with Joachim about the music, the film, and the philosophy behind Sentimental Value. “I wondered how to express such translucent virtues in this score; that’s why a great deal of the process was embedded in exercises of mediation and translation. In order to avoid directness, I decided to impure the sound with a succession of small sonic gestures - whether re-arranging, re-orchestrating, revisiting, stretching the duration, or simply recording in a new acoustic environment. The mediated sound and expression allowed me to model a soundscape that inhabits both the old and the new, much like the house, which holds within itself the past, present, and future”.

In September 2024, Hania went to Oslo and spent a couple of days in the main film (the family home in Oslo) with her sound engineer, Agata Dankowska. The film crew was away in France to shoot another scene for the project, so they were allowed to freely explore the space - both visually and sonically. They made field recordings in the building, capturing the sounds of objects and furniture found in the apartment, and they also managed to record a couple of piano pieces. The house plays a significant role in the story, silently witnessing the tangled trajectories of its residents. “To explore its interiors so closely inevitably reminded me of getting to know a real person, with all their vulnerable parts and secrets. And although most of the recordings were not supposed to become part of the final soundtrack, I felt that this visit gave me access to another, far more intimate layer of the film, which immensely informed my composing process afterwards and reshaped my relationship with the project. Masin strived to make ambient music for movement, not in the standard dance music sense, but “dynamic music, with a beating heart full of love.” Reconfiguring ambient’s association with solitary listening and cold academia, Gigi went outwards, channeling something somatic that connects with the body, not just the mind. “Bed on Mars” sets the titular tone for Masin’s renewed curiosity, with cosmic atmospherics evoking the sensation of waking up on a new planet unafraid, whilst the poignant synthesized trumpet and suspended liminal limbo of “Lost” feels like floating adrift in an unknown sea. Delving further into off-centre beats is the celestial techno funk of “Deception Dance,” which sounds like Sun Electric jamming with Carl Craig and Kraftwerk.
